Pieris Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: PIRS) is a publicly-traded, clinical-stage biotechnology company with operations in Germany and the United States. Pieris specializes in the discovery and development of Anticalin® protein-based drugs to target validated disease pathways in a unique and transformative way. Our pipeline includes inhalable Anticalin proteins to treat respiratory diseases, immuno-oncology multi-specifics tailored for the tumor microenvironment, and a half-life-optimized Anticalin protein to treat anemia. Proprietary to Pieris, Anticalin proteins are a novel class of therapeutics validated in the clinic and by partnerships with leading pharmaceutical companies.

This position includes a significant portion of “hands-on” lab work. Therefore, the successful candidate should have experience in laboratory research and a desire to pursue a laboratory-focused role. Nevertheless, you will have a scientific lead role in Analytical Development with the prospect of developing into and establishing a team lead role in analytical subfunctions.

To strengthen our team in Hallbergmoos, we are looking for an experienced:

Scientist Analytical Development (m/f/d)

Your Tasks

  • Develop and execute biochemical and biophysical characterization of Anticalin® proteins, Anticalin based fusion proteins and monoclonal antibodies for projects in discovery and development stages
  • Plan and guide analytical method development (focus on but not limited to HPLC, CE, Spectroscopy) from generic methods through (molecule specific) early qualification and transfer to external partners, CMOs and CROs (in collaboration with QC)
  • Subject matter expert and core team member for analytical development and characterization over multiple discovery and development projects
  • Comparability studies, CQA assessment and protein characterization for early stage development projects in tight interaction with CMC and other technical functions
  • Responsible for acquisition, performance monitoring and technical function of analytical instrumentation (maintaining or establishing good laboratory practice principles)
  • Establish MS based analytics/oversee MS work at CROs to support characterization efforts and other activities in the company (e.g. chemical stability, molecule identification etc.)
  • Maintain records and experiment results following quality principles (GxP-like)

  • Interaction with external partners to ensure efficient knowledge transfer to and from Pieris

Our Requirements

  • PhD in Biotechnology, Biochemistry or related scientific area
  • 2+ years of practical (ideally industrial) experience in protein characterization ideally in the area of biologics (e.g. Antibodies or similar)
  • Advanced background in general instrumental analytics ((U)HPLC, CE etc.), separation techniques and biophysical characterization
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, especially in the field of biotherapeutics characterization and method development is a strong plus
  • Ideally the successful candidate has hands-on experience and understanding of LC-MS instrumentation and expertise in the field of protein, peptide and glycan analysis
  • Proficiency in the analysis of PTMs relevant in degradation pathways and protein function is desirable
  • Ability to critically analyze data, compile technical reports (up to the standards for source documents for regulatory filings) and present and discuss results in multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience with data management tools and good documentation practice is an advantage
  • Familiarity with standard computer software (MS Office), statistics software (Origin, Graphpad PRISM, JMP etc.) and specialized software for acquisition and evaluation of analytical data (e.g. Thermo Chromeleon)
